TO SHOW FILETYPE, HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS, AND PATHS: Windows XP's default settings deal with the display of extensions/filetypes in My Computer/Windows Explorer by hiding them if they are already 'associated' with an application. This can get disconcerting sometimes when it's important to see the .XXX at the right end of a filename and it's hidden. Also, hidden files & folders and paths are not visible. So here is how to change your settings so that extensions/filetypes are displayed all the time, and that paths, hidden files and folders are visible in My Computer/Windows Explorer: 1. Double-click on My Computer. 2. Click on 'Tools' (on the Menu bar). 3. Click on 'Folder Options' (at the bottom of the drop-down menu). 4. Click on the 'View' tab (of the Folder Options window). 5. Check the box for 'Display the full path in the address bar. 6. Check the box for 'Display the full path in the title bar. 7. Under 'Hidden files and Folders', choose the 'Show all files and folders' radio button. 8. Uncheck the box for 'Hide extensions for known file types'. 9. Click on the OK button. 10. 'X out' of the My Computer window. TO ENABLE SEARCHES FOR HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS In WinXP, the default settings for the Search feature exclude searching for hidden files and folders. This should be enabled. Here’s how to do it: 1. Click on Start | Search | Files or Folders | All files and folders | More advanced options. 2. Make sure that the first three of the five boxes have checks in them. 3. You can ‘X Out’ of the Search Results window, or continue with your search. These new settings will be remembered – no need to do this for each search. (XPClassLook.txt)
