Bob,

Go to:
In upper right corner of screen, click on the button named "Microsoft Office 2010 Beta - Get it now", and start the process to download the program. Make sure to accurately record the Product Key assigned to you just before the download starts. You'll need it later to activate the program while installing it.

On the next screen you'll need a Hotmail address, so get it first at:
On left side of page is where you start the signup process for a hotmail address.

Good luck, Dale....

Dale, I  downloaded the beta version of 2010 Office.  It took me a bit to activate it but all ended well.  Now I have to create an association in the Default Programs Control Panel to open the emails.  Do you have any idea of how that is accomplished?
Thanks Bob

Bob,

Good show!

From within Internet Explorer, click on Tools | Internet Options | Programs tab | Set Programs button | Set your default programs. On list of programs, click on Windows Live Mail and then click on Set as default. Click on OK and then 'X-Out' until you get back to Desktop.

Thanks Dale,  I followed your instructions and when I got there it said that Windows Live Mail was the default.  I reset it to be sure.  When I checked the emails I had with a pps opening it still told me I needed to create an association in the default programs control panel.  I reset it a few more times to be sure (an old man syndrome) but the same message came up.  There is probably some small thing that I am missing or maybe the girl from New Delhi who set it up wants me to use Hindu.  I would appreciate any added information you may have and want to apologize for taking up so
much of your time.

Bob,

Try saving the PPS attachment as a file separate from the e-mail. Go to wherever you saved it and right-click on it. Then click on Properties. If the  "Opens with" is not PowerPoint, click on the Change button. If PowerPoint is suggested, double-click on it. Now PowerPoint is the designated application to open PPS files. If PowerPoint is not suggested, browse to the POWERPNT.EXE file and double-click on it. You'll probably have to do the same thing for PPT files.

Once the association is made between PPS (and PPT) files, clicking on the attachment name in Windows Live Mail should open the attachment.

Good luck, Dale....

Dave, I finally had success.  Many thanks to you for the help.  I did run into a problem that may be of help to you in the future.  When I did what you instructed the first time it did not work.  I tried several times with no luck.  It kept telling me I already had a program installed which certainly was not working.  I finally dug a little deeper and found power point 2007 was there and two copies of excel 2003.  I decided since all of 2010 beta was available I would delete the older programs.  After I did this, I went back to the email and when I clicked on open the computer configured for 2010 beta and opened the email.  I have no idea of why the older programs did not work. Windows 7 is interesting and occasionally frustrating.  I hope to see you a future classes.

Bob,

Well Office 2010 is still in Beta testing status and it didn't want to play the ball game following Windows rules when another version of Office is present.

But you followed your intuition and successfully got to the final objective. I congratulate you. You truly learned a lot in this exercise.

Congratulations, Dale....
