Separating Eudora Program and Data files
by John H Meyers, 10 Sep 2010

Here's a simple way to separate Eudora's Program and Data files:
  • Back up everything. Make sure program file "x1lib.dll" is backed up. (This file was in original version 7, but is no longer distributed, so not everyone has this file)
  • Uninstall Eudora -- this removes exactly those files originally installed, leaving "user" files untouched, letting Eudora do all the "figuring out" for you.
  • Copy the Eudora folder that now contains what remains from the previous step to your new "user data" location. Typically, this would be:
    • in WinXP:
      C:\Documents and Settings\Dale\Application Data\Qualcomm
    • in Vista & Win7:
      C:\Users\Dale\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm
  • Delete the entire original Eudora folder.
  • Re-install the program files, using original or current installer, and add saved original "x1lib.dll" if you had it.
ALTERNATIVE APPROACH:

Even if the entire original directory contents are copied to a new data location, before deleting the original directory, the result is normally not bothered by extra "program" files having been copied to a user data area.

Whether one leaves extra program files as-is, or removes them either before or after copying the original combined directory, all concern is eliminated about forgetting to move any important user data (including plugins, if any).

Here's a list of user data files anyway, should anyone be wanting such a checklist:

Personally, whenever I pack for traveling, I discover that there's always something I've forgotten, so when it comes to packing up and moving data, I prefer to "copy everything," then (optionally) remove what I don't need.
